I have been carving decoys for over 13 years, taught the craft by one of my very best friends, who I continue to carve with. After carving for many years as a hobby, my passion for working with wood led to my decision to pursue woodworking full-time. As wood is carved the hidden uniqueness of each piece is revealed. My fascination with the different color and grain patterns that are uncovered has led to my interest in woodturning and furniture making. It excites me that you never know what natural design will be revealed as the piece is carved, turned or planed. When I find a burl, I can’t wait to open it and see what is inside. Unfortunately when decoys are painted many of these unique features are hidden, with turning and furniture making, finishes can be used that highlight these natural variations. Small imperfections, "checks", which make the wood unacceptable for other purposes can add unique character and beauty. I design, carve, turn, paint and finish each item myself. By doing the finishing work by hand and using natural finishes whenever possible, I hope to create functional art that someone will long to touch and which reveals to them the inner beauty of wood.
